Lightsaber Training is an experience in Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser that lets you see what it's like to hone your Jedi skills with a lightsaber. Use a lightsaber or shield to deflect incoming laser beams from wall-mounted training stations.

When does it work?

Lightsaber Training in Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser | details and information (2)

At this point, it's still unclear when exactly guests on the Galactic Starcruiser voyage will be able to participate in lightsaber training.

The official Galactic Starcruiser itinerary lists lightsaber training on the first day of your voyage, but as 'unscheduled'. Guests can book it during this time, but there is currently no official time for the experience.

It's also unclear if lightsaber training is only available on Day 1, or if you can do it on Day 2 as well. Stay tuned for official experience times coming soon.

How it works

Lightsaber Training in Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser | details and information (3)

When the round is over, the guests enter an open space, which we can call a kind of Jedi doji. There are 4 wall mounted training stations in a row where the laser beams come from.

The guests go to the designated circle on the floor in front of the training station and indicate where they should stand. Once training begins, guests block incoming explosions with a lightsaber or a shield (easier for kids).

There is a visible laser beam coming out of the wall and pointing at a specific point. The goal is to quickly move your lightsaber to the different points and block as many laser beams as possible like a jedi.

Disney mentioned that fiber optic elements are built into the walls of the room, helping guests anticipate where the next explosions will come from and arrive in time. Of course, all of this is happening at high speed, so it's a challenge to keep up.

(Video) Lightsaber Training Session - Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser

Special effects are built into the walls that can be triggered if you block the explosions, making for an interesting viewing experience. We envision something similar to the walls in Rise of the Resistance when they are destroyed.

Of course, once you start exercising, it will take time to get the hang of it. Because of this, the experience begins slowly, like a video game. The further you get, the more difficult it gets and the more you have to anticipate where the next explosions will come from.

Guests can even use the Force to block the lasers if they reach a high enough level. Using the Force looks amazing and we can't wait to try it.

We're still waiting to see if there will be a scoring system and how your performance in lightsaber training might affect the rest of your journey.

the lightsaber

Lightsaber Training in Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser | details and information (5)

Of course we're here to wield a lightsaber, so let's find out more about it! During the lightsaber training experience, guests use a special training lightsaber made for the experience. It is a lightsaber replica, similar to those found in Dok Ondar's Workshop or Savi's Workshop in Galaxy's Edge.

It's not as sophisticated as older lightsabers and has a fairly simple shape. It still has all the sounds and special effects like Galaxy's Edge. The blade lights up when you turn it on, but it doesn't retract. It also vibrates and makes lightsaber noises when you move it or smack something against it.

Lightsabers can be quite difficult to use for some guests, especially children, so Disney also introduced shields into the experience. Shields are used to block incoming laser beams, just like lightsabers, but it's a little easier to block.

Can you use a real lightsaber?

For several months, Disney has been showing its “real” lightsaber as part of the Star Wars Hotel project. This thing is amazing and has a real blade that pops out and then retracts into the hilt.

After seeing this, fans naturally want to know if they can use one of the real lightsabers in the Galactic Starcruiser, or even buy one.

Unfortunately, the answer to this question is no. The actual lightsabers that Disney has on display cannot be used by guests and are used solely by the cast members.

A while back, Disney gave us our first look at lightsabers at work with a video of Rey wielding one in an impressive manner:

You can see when the lightsaber is off, only the hilt is visible, and the blade is retracted. Once the lightsaber is powered on, the blade will pop out of the hilt and point straight up, just like in the movie. It even makes the same lightsaber sound when it's on.

Recently, Josh D'Amaro, President of Disney Parks, Experiences and Products, gave a live preview of the lightsaber on stage at the recent Destination D23 event.

D'Amaro stood on stage, lightsaber in hand, and as the lights in the room dimmed, the blade came out of the hilt, glowing blue, and the lightsaber jingled.

It was a very powerful moment and a testament to the efforts of Disney Imagineers.

Lightsaber Training in Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser | details and information (6)

On the Galactic Starcruiser, guests only use their designated training lightsabers, which are replicas. That sucks, especially after Disney promoted them so much. The only question now is why can't guests use them?

If the lightsaber really "works", then allowing guests to wield something as dangerous as a lightsaber would be a major safety hazard. We didn't see the lightsaber actually cut anything, so when Disney says it's a functional lightsaber, they probably mean that it just goes up and down the hilt, not that it's actually hot and capable of objects to cut like a real light.

We have a hard time believing they're actually dangerous, otherwise the actors probably wouldn't be allowed to handle them either. We think they are so expensive to produce that they don't want guests to touch them for fear of damaging them.

Ultimately, we'll have to wait and see what lightsabers they can use in Galactic Starcruiser. Anyway, we're excited and can't wait to spend some time training to become a Jedi!

Lightsaber training in action

During the recent Destination D23 event, Josh D'Amaro, Disney President of Parks, Experiences and Products, boarded the Galactic Starcruiser and shared his experiences in the Lightsaber Training Room.

Lightsaber Training in Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser | details and information (7)

As we can see in the video, guests enter a room and in front of one of the wall training stations that fire lasers to practice. There are 3 stations in the room, which means that the experience should be possible for up to 3 people at a time.

Lightsaber Training in Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser | details and information (8)

Visitors must remain on the ground within the designated area while attempting to block incoming lasers with their lightsaber.

Lightsaber Training in Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser | details and information (9)

The device fires a beam of light that looks like a laser. As far as we can see, it changes direction with every explosion and the guests have to react quickly to the direction it explodes.

Lightsaber Training in Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser | details and information (10)

It looked like quite a challenge as you can't predict which direction the explosions will come from and you have to react as quickly as possible.

Lightsaber Training in Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser | details and information (11)

Here is the full video of Josh D'Amaro training with a lightsaber on the Galactic Starcruiser:

It looks like an explosion (no pun intended), although after watching the video we have some concerns. We were hoping that subsequent explosions would look a little more realistic and not just streaks of light shooting out of the wall. It would also have been a lot better if they found a way to make the explosive devices levitate like in A New Hope.

We reserve our final judgment until we're able to live the experience, and we still hope it's one of the most fun things to do on the Galactic Starcruiser.

how to reserve

Lightsaber Training in Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser | details and information (12)

I like moredoes not activate Star Wars: Galactic StarcruiserTo experience lightsaber training, you must make a reservation. It's not like an amusement park attraction where you have to wait in line. This is very important because if you don't make a reservation you don't have a chance to do it.

When you enter your Galactic Starcruiser itinerary into the Play Disney Parks app's datapad, you'll find that no lightsaber training is scheduled.

Appears as an event that can be scheduled but is not yet scheduled on your personal roadmap. It's possible to have it scheduled automatically 30 days before you leave, but that's not always the case.

Checking your itinerary before departure and it not being automatically planned for you means that each guest is free to plan their own lightsaber training if they wish.

To book lightsaber training, you must speak to a crew member upon arrival.

ADVICE:Don't waste time making reservations when arriving on the Galactic Starcruiser. This is certainly one of the most popular experiences and you run the risk of not getting the booking time you want or not being able to book at all.

frequently asked questions

Is the lightsaber experience on the Galactic Starcruiser free?

Yes, lightsaber training is free and included with your Galactic Starcruiser vacation package.

(Video) Star Wars Galactic Starcruiser | Lightsaber Training | The Saja | The Backstory | Walt Disney World

Is the Lightsaber Experience open both days?

Disney hasn't said if lightsaber training will be open for a day or two of the trip. In the official itinerary, it only appears on "Day 1", leading us to assume that it will only be available for one day and not both.

We'll keep you posted when we're sure.

How many times can I train with a lightsaber?

At this time, we're not sure if Disney will allow guests to take lightsaber training multiple times during their trip, or if it will be limited to once per guest.

Reservations are required, so if you're doing the experience more than once, it probably depends on how busy it is.

It also depends if lightsaber training is only open on day 1 or both days. Please note that there will be between 200 and 500 guests on each voyage. There are only 4 training modules in the room, so if the experience lasts 5 minutes, that doesn't give much opportunity for repetition.

At the moment I'm assuming it will be limited to once per guest but will see when it opens.

Is there a height or age requirement?

No, there are no height or age requirements to complete the lightsaber training experience. Of course, each participating guest must be tall enough to hold one of the lightsabers or shields, so it's not something very young children will enjoy.

As long as they can wield the lightsaber or shield and understand the concept of blocking laser beams, they will be fine and have fun.

Is lightsaber training hard to learn?

No it is not. Lightsaber training was designed with little ones in mind, so don't expect it to be too difficult to learn or perform. Guests who tried it commented that it was challenging at first but wasn't difficult to master after a few minutes.

Disney had to strike a balance between making it easy for kids and fun for adults at the same time. I envision the learning curve being something like Toy Story Mania, where guests of all ages can pick up the concept and play without too much difficulty.

Can you use your own lightsaber at home?

no i can't Guests receive an experience-specific training lightsaber and cannot use a custom lightsaber or any of the Galaxy's Edge legacy lightsabers.

Can I buy the training lightsaber?

no i can't The Galactic Starcruiser Training Lightsaber Replica is not for sale and can only be used during the Lightsaber Training experience.

Will Disney Ever Sell A Real Lightsaber?

Additionally, guests are not permitted to purchase the "real" lightsabers that Disney designed specifically for the Galactic Starcruiser. These are the ones with the blade actually going up and retracting back into the hilt.

Guests cannot use this lightsaber on the Galactic Starcruiser, nor can they purchase one to take home.

There are likely other lightsabers for sale in The Chandrila Collection, maybe even exclusive Star Wars Hotel lightsabers that you can't buy anywhere else.
