Here I will talk about how Savi's workshop works, the price and my assessment of this unique experience.
How do I make a reservation to build a lightsaber?
To build a lightsaber, you must first book in advance. This is an extremely popular stop at Hollywood Studios and spaces are limited. You can book in advance atSite da Disney. Reservations can be made 60 days in advance.
You must use a credit card to hold your reservation, but it will not be charged at the time of booking. However, if you do not show up for your reservation, you will be charged the full price of the lightsaber. So if you can't make it, cancel online, call Disney to cancel, or visit Savi's in person to cancel.
If you don't find any open reservations, you can check availability in person. There will be a number of seats available but these are subject to availability and not guaranteed. I would recommend getting to the park early if you plan on trying a lightsaber building tour.
Please note that your booking is for one person plus one guest. Your entire group cannot see the construction. Cast members make exceptions for young children who would otherwise be left unsupervised, but it's up to you.
How much does it cost to build a lightsaber?
Building a lightsaber at Savi's Workshop costs $249.99 plus tax. There are no discounts with the Disney or DVC Annual Pass for this experience, but you can use those discounts on any extras or accessories you purchase.
The above price includes the build experience (which I'll detail below), the custom lightsaber, and a carrying case.
You can also buy a lightsaber holder for $25 or a belt clip for $18.
You pay for your experience and these optional extras when you sign up for your reservation.
How does building a lightsaber work?
When you arrive at Savi's Workshop to make your reservation, you will be presented with a menu of options for choosing your lightsaber. Your options include:
- peace and justice
Recovered remains of fallen Jedi temples and wrecked starships in these Republic-era designs pay homage to the galaxy's former guardians. - power and control
Originally forged by dark side warriors, this style is rumored to feature remnants of the Sith homeworld and abandoned temples. - elemental nature
This theme embodies the Force, an energy generated by all living things such as Brylark trees, Cartusion whale bones, and Rancor teeth. - protection and defense
The hilt's materials have mysterious motifs and inscriptions that reconnect the user to the ancient source of power.
After making your selection, you will be asked to pay for your lightsaber.Payment in advance. You will be given a pin to wear, symbolizing your chosen lightsaber theme. You'll also receive a color-coded map that represents the group of builders you'll encounter.
After your color chart is called, you will be taken to the store and given a workspace. The pickers (the artists working in the shop) will guide you through the building process. This part is more of a show. You hear the story of the Jedi Masters in front of you. And learn more about the construction process and why it's so important. Any Star Wars fan would greatly appreciate the attention to detail and story.
Then it's time to start building. The collectors working in the shop will bring you a tray with the parts that have been "recovered" so you can build this lightsaber. They will help you choose a Kyber Crystal (which will bring your lightsaber to life and essentially determine the color and sounds of your lightsaber). Then they help you assemble based on the parts you choose.
Collectors will ask you to place your lightsaber in a special docking station. Moments later, the top of the station opens, revealing his lightsaber with a lit blade. The blade is 31" long and made of glass.
You can choose as many combinations as you like when building your lightsaber. And chances are every builder around you has a different and unique lightsaber.
Unused parts will be returned (you will not keep unused parts that you did not select in the building process). You remove your lightsaber and then grab a backpack.
Can I send my lightsaber home?
If you would like your lightsaber shipped to your home, Disney World can deliver it to your home.
You have a few options for doing this. If you're on Galaxy's Edge, you can go to the Droid Depot to have it shipped to you. You can go to Dok Ondar's Cave of Antiquities to have it shipped to you. Or visit your resort's gift shop. Prices vary, but we paid $18 for shipping from Orlando to the Chicago area.
If you choose to take your lightsaber with you on the flight home, the TSA allows you to do so. But you should check with your airline before travelling.
Who would like this experience?
Building a lightsaber at Savi's Workshop is an incredible experience for any Star Wars fan. This is definitely more of an adult experience. While Disney only requires Builders to be 5 and up, I personally wouldn't recommend this for kids under 10 (give or take, depending on your child).
The lightsaber itself is NOT a toy and would not be suitable for a child looking for a light saber to play with. This would be more of an experience for anyone looking for a display piece. Toy lightsabers can be purchased at various Hollywood Studios stores at much cheaper prices.
If you're looking for a more kid-friendly alternative or something to play with more, I recommend building an android at the Droid Depot.
Obtaining additional or replacement lightsaber parts
When building your lightsaber, you choose a theme and receive a variety of parts based on that theme. But what do you do when you're torn between two different pieces or styles? Or if something happens and you need a replacement part for your lightsaber?
If you would like additional parts for your lightsaber hilt (or base), you can return to Savi's Workshop and ask to see her scrap parts.
You can also go to Dok Ondar's Cave of Antiquities to purchase additional Kyber Crystals to change the color of your lightsaber.
Savi's Workshop Review
My husband Kurt and I went to Savi's workshop to build a custom lightsaber. We had our 2 year old daughter with us, and although the rules only allow one builder and one guest per booking, the entertainers allowed us to bring her with us for our booking.
We chose the peace and justice themed lightsaber. We were given a pin to show our choice and a card to enter the workshop. Then we wait to be called to our turn to build.
As we sat and waited, we saw Kylo Ren and a group of stormtroopers heading towards Savi's workshop. Cast members in the workshop shouted that Kylo Ren was coming and all discussions of lightsabers stopped. Kylo Ren told his Stormtroopers that it was "just a junk shop" and they left.
I found this level of detail incredibly funny. This was more than a memory. This was a complete experience that included cast members working outside the store, characters roaming the grounds, and guests acting as builders.
So they called us into the store and gave us a job. All builders are placed on a work surface around the room. Artists working in the shop, called Collectors, tell a dramatic story about the history and importance of building your own lightsaber as part of your Jedi training. This story is more than just a lightsaber background. It's a complete show. There is music and lighting, and the narration is very funny and dramatic. It really builds anticipation for the experience.
After we became familiar with the meaning of this ritual, the Gatherers guided us through the construction process. We placed our purple kyber crystal pick on the handle and selected the pieces to complete the build. We were then told to install the identifier at a station, and the collectors built up anticipation as we waited for the final stage of construction.
Then the station opened and our lightsaber, complete with an illuminated purple blade, was revealed. Then everyone raised their lightsabers at the same time, which was amazing to see in person.
Overall, this experience was unlike any other. It was part of the show, it was the construction of an individual piece, it was a childhood dream come true. It was everything we had hoped for. And I'm not someone who would ever think of spending $200 on a lightsaber.
With such a high price tag, you might be wondering if it's worth the price tag for you. I'd say it's worth it if you're a Star Wars fan, have dreamed of building or owning your own lightsaber since childhood, have always wanted a cosplay or collectible, or simply love these truly unique pieces. and unique experiences. Because really every guest has a different experience with building a lightsaber at Savi's Workshop.
